Online Fire Safety Permit Application Instructions

Before You Begin

Please have the following information and documents ready before starting your application:

  • Project site information and job address
  • Scope of work details
  • Relevant plans, specifications, or supporting documents
  • Contractor and license information, if applicable
  • Any system details needed for the permit type being submitted

Step 1. Fire Safety Permits

A. Pre-Engineered Extinguishing System Permit Application Submission

The Beverly Hills Permit Center processes permit applications for pre-engineered extinguishing systems, such as kitchen hood wet-chemical and clean agent systems.

A permit is required before any installation, modification, repair, or removal of these systems in new or existing facilities may begin. Performing work without a permit is prohibited and may result in violations or penalties.

Permit Is Required For:

  • Installation of new pre-engineered (listed) systems for hoods or special hazards
  • Relocation of nozzles, piping, or detection components
  • Replacement of agent tanks, control heads, or releasing mechanisms
  • System upgrades affecting performance or listing conditions
  • Decommissioning or removal of existing systems

B. DAS (Distributed Antenna System) Permit Application Submission

The Beverly Hills Permit Center processes permit applications for public safety radio enhancement systems (DAS/BDA).

A permit is required before installation, modification, or testing of a DAS to ensure reliable in-building emergency responder radio coverage.

Permit Is Required For:

  • New DAS/BDA installations to meet emergency radio coverage requirements
  • Expansion, reconfiguration, or power changes to existing systems
  • Antenna, cabling, head-end, or battery/UPS replacements impacting performance
  • Annual testing or re-acceptance testing after building modifications
  • Decommissioning or removal of radio enhancement equipment

C. Two-Way Emergency Communication Permit Application Submission

The Beverly Hills Permit Center processes permit applications for two-way emergency communication systems, such as systems used in areas of refuge, stairwells, and similar locations.

A permit is required before installation or alteration to ensure code-compliant emergency communication for occupants and responders.

Permit Is Required For:

  • New two-way communication systems in required locations, including areas of refuge and elevators
  • Relocation or addition of call stations, control panels, or annunciation devices
  • Wiring, power supply, or supervisory/alarm function changes
  • Integration with fire alarm or monitoring systems
  • Decommissioning or removal of existing systems

D. CO2 Monitoring System Permit Application Submission

The Beverly Hills Permit Center processes permit applications for carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring systems associated with beverage dispensing, cultivation, laboratories, and storage or use areas.

A permit is required before installation or modification to ensure occupant safety, alarm setpoints, ventilation interlocks, and notification functions are compliant.

Permit Is Required For:

  • New fixed CO2 detection or monitoring systems with audible and visual alarms
  • Changes to sensor locations, quantities, or alarm thresholds
  • Integration with ventilation, shutoff, or building automation systems
  • Power supply, battery backup, or supervisory changes
  • Removal or relocation of existing monitoring equipment

E. Evacuation Map Permit Application Submission

The Beverly Hills Permit Center reviews submittals for evacuation maps to verify accuracy, readability, and posting locations for occupant safety.

A permit or approval is required for new or revised maps to ensure conformance with applicable code requirements and building features.

Permit or Approval Is Required For:

  • New evacuation maps for tenant improvements or new buildings
  • Revisions reflecting changes to floor plans, exits, or fire protection systems
  • Updates to legends, "You Are Here" indicators, and accessibility routes
  • Relocation or addition of posted map locations
  • Removal or replacement of existing posted maps

Final Inspection & Compliance

All permitted work must pass required inspections. Approval is granted after verification that installations, testing, and documentation comply with the Beverly Hills Municipal Code, California Building Standards Code, and applicable NFPA standards.

Step 2. Staff Review

City staff will review your application and contact you if additional information is needed. Please allow approximately two (2) to three (3) business days for staff review. After your request is finalized and submitted, you will be assigned a reference number. You will also receive a notification email with additional instructions. Please include your reference number if you contact staff with questions or need to provide clarification regarding your application. Step 3. Payment

After staff processes your application, you will receive a CitySmart notification email with additional information, a breakdown of plan review and/or permit fees, and a link to the online payment portal.
